Crochet pattern to make hats in any size

This pattern is especially designed for anyone who is just learning to crochet, or who just likes to keep things simple!  To follow this pattern, you just need to be able to work in basic double crochet (this is called single crochet in the USA)

The pattern is unusual in that it isn't written in the usual crochet abbreviations, but in good old 'plain english', with some hints and tips for beginners thrown in for good measure. No counting of stitches or tension checks are required. 

The hats can be made in any size, from baby to adult, and in almost any type of yarn. You can make a simple, straightforward beanie, or one with a turned back brim, or maybe a fashionably slouchy style - or use up oddments of yarn to make a multi-coloured hat like the baby beanie shown in the picture - all from the same easy pattern.
